I was so excited to read this story as I absolutely devoured Jenny McLachlan’s Land of Roar series and let me tell you, Dead Good Detectives did not disappoint.
The story follows a young girl called Sid, who enjoys hanging out in graveyards hunting ghosts and making maps. When she accidentally releases a ghost from his afterlife prison, she is catapulted into an adventure against the clock to help finish the unfinished business of her new ghostly friend.
Dead Good Detectives has all the hallmarks i had come to love about the way that Jenny McLachlan writes. The characters were loveable, with their own personalities and really helped bring the story to life. The story twists and turns in unexpected ways, making you want to read on to uncover the truth.
Something I really loved about Dead Good Detectives was the setting. Most people read a story for the characters and plot but for me, the one thing that really brought the story of Sid was the setting. Sid lives in a seaside town called Fathom and the way the winding streets are spoken about and described really conjures thoughts of the seaside towns I have visited on my numerous childhood holidays in Devon and Cornwall. Reading about Sid traversing the streets and the views from the cliff tops brought me straight back to my childhood.
Overall, Jenny McLachlan has another smash hot on her hands and I’m already counting down the days before I can get my hands on the next instalment.
