WHAT.A.BOOK!! Having read Crater Lake and Crater Lake: Evolution by Jennifer Killick, I was really excited when she announced that she would have a new book coming out. I spent months waiting for her new story to be released and when it arrived, it did not disappoint.

From the moment I opened the book and read the first line I was hooked. Within a page, the tension had already ramped up and I was dying to find out what would happen next. The way the characters are written, you feel like you know them. You went to school with people just like them and I think that really helps you feel connected to the story and the emotions the characters feel through the story. I know we aren’t meant to have favourites but I really liked the characters of Angelo and Hallie. Their personalities compliment each other, one being shy and reserved, the other being loud and ready for a fight. It’s dynamics within a story like this that keep you transfixed as you want to see not only what is going on but how the characters will react to each other.

As I read further into the book I was well and truly creeped out. Jennifer Killick has a way of writing that makes the villains get under your skin, or in this case the ground. I couldn’t put the book down but at the same time, my skin was literally covered in goosebumps. I had some assumptions as I read certain parts of the story but in true Killick fashion, she threw in some twists and curveballs that took you in a totally different direction.

Overall I would highly recommend Dread Wood as it has all the classic hallmarks of a Middle-Grade horror story but with the added comedy that anyone would enjoy. I cannot wait to read the next instalment. I already have the creeps.
