Neon Gods is the modern retelling of the story of Persephone and Hades from Greek myth. The names the gods carry are a legacy, not just a name. When someone becomes a Greek god, they embody the god they have become.

Persephone, daughter of Demeter, lives a life of wines and parties but when Zeus lays claim to her, she panics. Fleeing from the upper city persuade by Zeus’ henchmen, Persephone is faced with a choice: return to Zeus, who has a long history of abusing and even killing his mistresses, or cross the bridge into the lower city, a kingdom ruled by Hades, who has long been dead.

Persephone’s choices lead her on a journey that see her become a willing capture to the mysterious man that has had her interests for many years, Hades. Being one of the 13, the round table of gods that have say over the world, Hades is not in a position to step out of line but something about his new house guest makes him do crazy things.

Although this was a good read, I really liked the Greek god theme, I found it difficult to read. I am not one for books like 50 Shades of Grey and Neon Gods is definitely in the same category so I found it a slog to get through.
