With Halloween fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking about what books to read this spooky season. Will you go for a spine-chilling thriller with monster lurking behind every turn or a supernatural race against time to save a dear friend from the perils of the after life.

Here are a few of my favourite hair-raising, spine-chilling and leg-shaking stories that i have read in the past. Watch out….There may be something lurking just beyond your book 👻

What Lives In The Woods by Lindsey Currie When Ginny’s plans for her perfect summer are derailed by a “family vacation”, she un-expectantly finds herself at the centre of some strange happenings and her survival hinges on uncovering the secrets of Woodmoor Manor. Can she get to the bottom of the ghostly figures and whispers in the night before it is too late?

A thrilling pace turning adventure that will have you checking behind all your doors and sleeping with the light on. When the whispers begin, do not go after them.

Dead Good Detectives by Jenny McLachlan Living in a quaint seaside town, Sid has to find other ways to amuse herself. While playing in the Fathom graveyard, she accidentally realises the ghost of a famous Fathom pirate but as a result, she also begins a race against time to save the pirate’s soul before he disappears forever. Will Sid (with the help of her best friend Zen) be able to finish what the ghost started over 300 years ago?

From racing through graveyards to lurking in a haunted tavern for ghosts, Sid’s adventure will have you on the edge of your seat and dodging a sinister landlord determined to reclaim his bounty.

The Sad Ghost Club by Lize Meddings When everyone else seems to be having the time of their afterlife except you, what can you do? A chance meeting at a party leads Sad Ghost floating through the town with a stranger opening up about how they feel. Will Sad Ghost find a new friend or will they think they are peculiar? A charming comic style approach to anxiety, loneliness and finding your people. Even in the afterlife, friends are there to help.

Dread Wood by Jennifer Killick What could be worse than getting detention? Getting Saturday detention! When Hallie, Angelo, Gustav and Naira are tasked with cleaning up the school grounds, things start to get weird. When their teacher is taken by something, the gang must uncover what is happening at their school and why is the caretaker whistling a nursery rhyme? With each twist and turn, your skin will be crawling to find the answers that plague the classmates.

Something lurks below the surface of this story but are you brave enough to untangle the web of clues to uncover the truth. When the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, pay attention. Something might be watching.

The Haunting of Aveline Jones by Phil Hickes A summer trip to see her auntie in her sea front cottage seems like a great way to spend the holidays but for supernatural obsessed Aveline, something seems off with the village. Grotesque looking scarecrows made from discarded objects line the streets and mysterious nosies in the night have her on edge, but when she stumbles on the diary of a young girl, who vanished without a trace a few years back, Aveline is thrust into the misty secret that lies below the waves. When the local legend threatens to cut Aveline’s trip (and life) short, she must enlist the help of an intriguing boy to save everyone from the impending doom. Can she find the answers she needs in the dusty attic of the town bookshop before it is too late?

From the murky depths, a vengeful spirits threatens to take the children in the town. Will Aveline be next or will she be the one to break the curse?
