I was really excited to read this amazing story from Sophie Anderson. Having read her previous two books ( The Girl who Speaks Bear and The House With Chicken Legs), it was imperative that i dive into this one as soon as possible. I have to admit, I really enjoyed reading the first two books so I was a little anxious about getting into the third. Many book series start to get monotonous in their storyline and characters but my days I was not disappointed with The Castle of Tangled Magic.
The story follows the life of a young girl (Olia) who has grown up in a castle that seems to be falling apart at the seams. She loves to explore and find the hidden passage around her home leading to parts of it no one has seen in centuries. When a storm threatens to tear everything she loves apart, Olia must venture to a corner of the castle that has been concealed for over 500 years.
What I really love about The Castle of Tangled Magic is how well the characters are mapped out so that with each chapter you learn something new about them. Their personalities aren’t static but flow to react to the situations that they find themselves in. The group grows the story and you get to see how the addition of new faces change the dynamic between them. This fluidity to the narrative the characters are putting forward also helps to make the story progress and you are lead to believe that you know the outcome but with any good story, there is always a twist on the next page.
The message I took away from reading TCOTM was that the people around you make somewhere feel like home more than the physical location does. I can’t wait to see what is next from Sophie Anderson but I know for sure it will be magical and enchanting.
N.B. Having read all three books so far, I find it super cute that people keep appearing from each book in other characters journies.
